The barn at Braziers...

The Braziers barn project is to repair and convert the wooden barn belonging to Braziers College into a multi-purpose community and educational facility.

The timber framed and weather boarded wooden barn is one of a number of buildings which constitute Braziers Park, an adult residential college situated in the village of Ipsden, south Oxfordshire.  It was built in the early 18th century, and is a Grade II listed building.  It is about 108m2/ 1,162 ft2 internal area and lies approximately 60 metres north east of the main house.  The main house was originally built in the 17th century and later remodelled in the Strawberry Hill gothic style. It is Grade II* listed.

The barn is no longer needed for its original agricultural purpose and its overall condition has deteriorated in recent years.  Repair and refurbishment of the barn would provide Braziers and the local community with a multi-functional single space, available for a number of purposes.  These would include a meeting hall, lecture theatre, performance, movement and exhibition space and a local venue with disabled facilities.  Seating would be available for 80 people.

The intention is that the refurbished, converted barn would be fully equipped for use independently of the main house, with its own kitchen, cloak room space and toilets, with full disabled access.  The work would ensure the continued viability of a significant historic building and provide a valuable and attractive venue.

Phased approach

To make the project more manageable and to enable fundraising to be for more specific elements of the work the project is to be divided into three phases:
